Under the Tracks: Consensus Reality

Consensus Reality means the reality that is generally agreed to be. Which to me means our perception of what’s real and valuable is usually based on what the majority of the human race deems real. I made this song to reflect my feelings about how we often base our actions on guidelines other people have set for us. Other people who might not be any better than us. I’ve always found it weird that most of the people in my generation grew up in an environment where questioning the status quo meant anarchy or blasphemy. It’s kind of always hard for me to accept something I have to do for no reason, I have no problems with following people, I just wanted to know why we’re gonna do it.

As a catholic boy growing up in the Philippines, I grew up being required to follow a lot of guidelines so people can hone me to become a functioning citizen in our little country. I always attended church every Sunday, did bible studies, prayer meetings, I even served as an altar knight for a couple of years. Even though I’ve read a lot of scripture and was lectured about what you should and shouldn’t do as a christian often, I never got to understand why I have to follow these things. I mean, how are we even sure that this book we are following is really something from an omnipotent? I guess there are studies out there proving this is or isn’t true, I don’t really care. My point is, most of us mediocrely follow what most of us think is the right thing to do because it’s easier that way. We choose to be sedated and let other people do the thinking for us instead of dwelling with our questions and trying to answer them ourselves. I find it really disturbing that most people choose to blind themselves with little pleasures and forget what they really want because the truth is just too painful to find out. I don’t have any qualms with people who find joy in little things, if that’s really what brings them joy. If they can honestly tell themselves that. It saddens me to see people letting go of what they really want just because the world told them they can’t.

I used samples from Twilight Zone, one of the old TV stuff I used to watch when I was in grade school. I’d like to explain what the Twilight Zone is but you can alway google it and look, you now know what it is. The cut I got for this song was from an episode about a dystopian future of our earth where faith and arts were cut from society to make way for everything “logical”. The center of the story is about Mr. Wordsworth, a librarian who was sanctioned death penalty because he is no longer useful to society. Because he believes in God, he is deemed delusional as the state has already proven that there is none such thing in this alternate universe. Mr. Wordsworth chose to stand for what he believed in to the end and eventually, he found a loophole in the state’s logic.

I guess this pretty much reflects how the majority of society judges those who oppose what they find easier to believe. I don’t have any problem with those who want to have faith in their deities, I actually admire those who genuinely believe. I think you should only believe in something if you want to believe in it, otherwise you are just wasting your time. I see a lot of people going to church just because they were told to or just because it’s how things have always been like I did when I was younger and I don’t think that’s something you should keep doing without understanding when you’re older. I am just using this as an example but this is pretty much applicable in other scenarios.

We often let the judgement of people we don’t even care about become hindrances for our growth. We let our fear of being labeled as ‘different’ become the basis of our decisions and I believe this is counter productive if we want to become better versions of ourselves. At the end of the day, these people who tell you what you should do won’t be taking the blame or praise for the results of your actions.

At the end of the day, it’s all about you.

On your death bed, when you start to regret not doing every thing you could have when you were younger, you won’t be able to blame anyone but yourself and your choices.

We can’t blame society or god if we never achieve our dreams, it’s all about our choices. Our choices makes us who we are and every time we choose to follow a path that isn’t our own or deny ourselves from finding it, I think we are better off dead.

The point of life is something really difficult to find and living someone else’s (who isn’t any better than you are) life is like throwing away yourself in a vat of acid. It will just slowly kill you and in the end, you’ll end up being nothing.

We’re all gonna die anyway, wouldn’t you rather die fighting or living for what you honestly and genuinely believe in?
